Quarry in the Ries crater
The Nördlinger Ries is one of the best-researched impact craters on earth. The Ries crater was created around 14 million years ago by an impact of an asteroid with a diameter of 1 km. The crater has the shape of a circular plate (diameter about 20-24 kilometers). The typical rock in our area is the "suevite", which was also suspected on the moon
In August 1970 NASA carried out geological field studies (exercises to determine rocks in the local quarries and geotopes) in the Ries crater for the astronauts of the Apollo 14 and 17 missions. This training provided an important basis for the later taking of rock samples from the moon.
