The Golden Gate Bridge’s construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1937, providing thousands of jobs when work was scarce during the Great Depression. When it opened, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world for several years. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss initially designed it as a hybrid cantilever-suspension bridge, but consultants like Irving Morrow added the iconic Art Deco elements and the orange color. The bridge is designed to sway up to 27 feet in strong winds, making it one of the most earthquake- and wind-resistant bridges of its time. The name comes from the Golden Gate Strait, the entrance from the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. That ‘antenna’ behind the Golden Gate Bridge is Sutro Tower . The antenna in the Twin Peaks–area hills, is the broadcast hub that’s been beaming TV and radio across San Francisco since the 1970s.
